Remember it wasn't so long ago that a priest would have to ride on horseback over several days to bring sacraments to some of his parishioners (Fr Gallitzin, OPN). The last 200 years in the USA could be a microcosm of Apostolic Mission to Christendom and back. What do we want our future to look like? I think the laity have much more power over that than they often realize.
Yes indeed, lay folk have the “power” to evangelize, but they need formation and encouragement so that they know how to use the power without looking strange.
We had our last one just past the invention and spread of automobiles in my home diocese from what I've heard. We could easily have to go back, yeah, like many do in Alaska or in other nations without many priests.
I love the idea of using an Evangelization Fund not only for faith formation resources but also for reimbusement of expenses incurred in networking to build a healthy parish. Yes, just knowing it is there acts as an incentiviser and reminder of the responsibilities of the lay vocation. Brilliant!
We need saints more than we need priests. Though we definitely need both.
